When developing a variety of products, the choice of grips can be a real source of worry for engineers. Engineers need to consider everything from materials to handle widths and how to utilize a wide variety of handles in their applications. This is more likely to be overwhelming when an engineer is developing a complex product. Handle selection should be incorporated early in the design process. A basic understanding of the functionality of grips before moving into design considerations can help engineers decide on the best grips for their application.


What is a handle? A handle is an object attached to a door or panel. Users can use a handle to open a panel or door, or carry it as an object. Handles provide the user with a comfortable, ergonomic grip when opening, closing and lifting.


Types of handles


Grab handles

Grab handles provide a comfortable, ergonomic grip that allows the user to easily and quickly open cabinets, doors or drawers. Operators are able to install this type of handle with ease. The two most common types of grips are surface mounted handles and folding handles. Southco can provide a variety of colors of grips for customers to choose from.


Surface Mount Grips

This type of handle provides the user with an ergonomic grip for opening doors and drawers, as well as removing installed panels. The latch handle is mounted on the outside surface of the door or panel. Typically, the mounting is concealed within the cabinet.


Folding Handle

When the mounting area is concealed, folding pulls become a low profile folding pattern. These handles fold up when not in use. Folding pulls can also be used as carrying handles if boxes or drawers are removed. This type of pull also has a friction feature that prevents rattling. Engineers can maintain user access to cabinets in limited space environments with Southco's P9 grade 90° folding handles. These handles provide easy access to open doors, drawers and compartments, but fold compactly to remain low and flat when not in use.


Flush Pull Handles

This type of pull provides users with an ergonomic grip without protruding hardware that can cause damage to door, drawer or panel surfaces.


Concealed Handle

Concealed pulls improve industrial design by eliminating joints in applications where styling and aesthetics are important. When the handle is not required, the handle remains concealed within the handle housing. When the user needs access to the housing, the handle can be released.


What grip should I choose?

Engineers need to carefully consider a number of factors to ensure they pick the right grip for their application. Here are a few factors to keep in mind when choosing a grip during the design process.



Application

The application for which the handle will be used will be the primary consideration when choosing a handle type. For many engineers, surface-mounted handles are ideal because they are inexpensive and easy to install. However, customers may need the handle to be flush with the surface for applications with space constraints or appearance requirements. Engineers may also need to consider the maximum pulling or lifting force load of the handle. This maximum force depends largely on the type of handle and method of installation. Aesthetics

Handles are often exposed in more visible locations on the product where they are needed to lift or move panels. Therefore, the design of the handle should complement the overall design of the product. Surface-mounted handles can provide a rugged and easy-to-use feel. Flush mounted handles can be integrated into the panel for a clean design aesthetic. Their flush rectangular design can provide a sense of two and simple functionality to the unit. The material and color of the handles are simultaneously important to the overall aesthetic. Aluminum or stainless steel pulls are suitable for modern, sturdy designs. Plastic handles, usually black, can complement the main color scheme.


Material considerations

Common handle materials are plastic, aluminum, zinc and stainless steel. Typically, handles are made of plastic or aluminum because customers are often concerned about weight. For example, in the aerospace industry, weight reduction is a key design consideration. When it comes to material considerations, weight is not the only factor for different industries. In manufacturing and industrial applications, certain materials, such as plastics, may not hold up over time. Stainless steel can handle harsh environments with high temperatures and moisture.


Ergonomics

The width and depth of the handle are important ergonomic design considerations. There is no standard width or depth for handles, but engineers should consider the comfort of the user when operating a handle or pull. Handles that are too narrow or too small can cause compression in the middle of the hand, leading to user discomfort. For the best ergonomic grip, engineers should assign enough handle width to accommodate the standard “four fingers.” This allows for the most comfortable handling of the handle. Due to space or budget constraints, some customers may choose a narrower grip. Engineers should generally select handles that are comfortable for the user.


Mounting Method

The method of mounting a pull handle or pull ring may be another design consideration. For grips, the most popular mounting method is surface mounting. For pull handles, the most popular mounting method is snap-in. The mounting method depends largely on your application and the type of handle.


Life Cycle

For most applications, handle life is not a design consideration. Standard use of the handle may not result in failure due to repeated use. Cosmetic damage may be a consideration, as well as depending on the market in which the product was developed. Specialized handle finishes can be utilized to ensure that the appearance of the handle does not wear out over time.
